Wise was founded in London in 2011 as a financial technology company, formerly known as TransferWise. Aiming to bring transparency to the cost of international money transfers for individuals and businesses, the company went public on the London Stock Exchange in 2021.
Wise built its business around using the real market exchange rate, in contrast to the hidden markups and high transfer fees of traditional banks. Users can hold a multi-currency account in more than 50 currencies, get local bank account details (UK, EUR, USD, AUD, NZD, and more), and use a payment card that works worldwide.
Its customers include people sending money abroad for salaries, rent, or tuition, freelancers, multi-country teams, and SMEs serving a global customer base.
